Who could forget the moment when a very elegant Julia Roberts went to the polo with Richard Gere in Pretty Woman? It’s possibly one of the most iconic movie moments of all time...

Now, we love a day at the polo (what’s not to love about the tradition of drinking champagne while stomping divots?), so thought we’d share a few of our style rules and the new Binny looks we’re lusting after this season worn by the gorgeous mother of three Natalie Decorte from The Polo Project (hello heavenly broderie lace dresses).

1. Elegance is the aim of the game

“I generally wear something feminine and floaty such as a midi skirt and shirt or a dress,” explains Natalie Decorte. Avoid anything too short or revealing – it’s all about the midi length. Remember, your ultimate style inspiration is Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

2. Invest in a great pair of wedges

On the hunt for the perfect pair of wedges? The Castañer family has been reinventing the espadrille since 1927 – they’re super chic and super affordable. The wrap ankle ties always look chic with a summer dress.

3. Don’t forget your sunglasses or wide-brimmed hat

A day at the polo is the perfect excuse to invest in some gorgeous new sunglasses and a beautiful big hat. You certainly don’t want to be stuck in the sun with no shade. “I always accessorise with a hat and fabulous sunnies. I try and keep jewellery to a minimum unless we have a jewellery sponsor and then I will choose simple classic pieces that are suitable for daytime,” says Decorte.

4. Follow the rules – no fascinators allowed

While any of these looks would be perfect for a day at the races (hello Derby Day – could these black and white pieces be any more perfect?), dressing for the polo is very different. It’s a fascinator free-zone so stick to straw or felt hats.

5. Keep your cool

“Our broderie lace is ideal for the polo as it’s cotton (it’s always so hot) and more relaxed,” explains Binny founder Belinda Watson. She’s also a fan of mixing it up with looks other than dresses. “I love jumpsuits as you look cool and don’t have to add too much. Our ‘Girl from Ipanema’ broderie cutout jumpsuit is perfect,” she says.
